TOKYO GUILD OPENS UP IN LONG BEACH JAPANESE GASTRO PUB FOOD IN A CASUAL SETTING

Long Beach CA (Perfect Meal Today) 7/7/19—At a preview tasting of the new TOKYO GUILD restaurant in Long Beach we were treated to an exclusive preview of their new Gastro Pub style food. The quite large space used to be home to a Mexican restaurant and is actually located in the trending Bixby Knolls section of Long Beach, an area that seems to be populated by fancy looking wine bars and bustling restaurants. Chef Taki Sada hails originally fromOsaka and the surprisingly youthful looking chef is no newcomer to the restaurant scene locally having opened Japonica in Redondo Beach in 2002.

This is a food experience well supported by the beach crowd that is still open, exposing guests to the true Japanese experience such as overflowing glasses of cold sake and serving house made smoked soy sauce.

A Culver City version of Tokyo Guild has also just opened, and opening two new restaurants within a week must be quite stressful but this chef seems like he can handle it with ease. The menu at both locations was created by Sada and his wife of seventeen years, Chika Sada. Mixologist Darwin Manahan will oversee both of the new locations. The design of the new spaces is predominately industrial exposed ceiling beams, graffiti art with a punk rock theme.

We started out with the Roasted Brussel Sprouts, an item you see in a lot of places today and this version was toasted in a Japanese balsamic dressing. chicken wings came in a sesame soy and Japanese seasoning. The Crispy shrimp (Ebi Mayo) was quickly consumed by all in attendance And will no doubt be one of the most popular items on the menu.

Other menu highlights include the Tonkotsu Ramen, a pork broth with slow braised pork belly chashu, a seasoned egg and green onion. Fairly simple presentation but with lots of flavor. The Guild Burger is a beef patty cutlet doused with kewpie mayo and katsu sauce. The Tokyo Sando is a straightforward egg salad and chicken teriyaki.

The liquor program at both venues features low ABV Chuhai with California inspired ingredients along with Japanese spirits. However at press time only the Culver City location has a full liquor license but beer and wine is available at both venues.
